Frequently Asked Questions
Is it safe to be around bees? Do they? sting?
Yes, it’s safe as long as certain rules are followed. Bees are not aggressive by nature; they only attack if they feel threatened. During visits, groups stay a safe distance from the hives, and if it’s necessary to get close, protective suits are provided. Furthermore, the bees are busy working and usually ignore humans unless disturbed.
How do you extract honey without harming bees?
The honey harvesting process is careful and respectful. Beekeepers remove only the combs that are completely capped (sealed with wax by the bees), indicating that the honey is ready. Not all the honey is extracted; a sufficient portion is left for the bees to feed on. Furthermore, techniques are used that do not disrupt the hive’s balance, ensuring the health of the hive and the sustainability of production.
How long does a bee live and what functions does it perform within the hive?
The lifespan of a bee varies depending on its role. Worker bees live between 4 and 6 weeks in spring and summer, and several months in winter. The drone lives for a few weeks and its sole function is to fertilize the queen. The queen bee can live from 3 to 5 years and is responsible for laying eggs. Within the hive, worker bees perform different tasks depending on their age: cleaning, feeding larvae, producing wax, defense, and collecting nectar and pollen.
What is the difference between natural honey and processed honey from the supermarket?
Natural honey, like the kind produced on our farm, is unpasteurized and unfiltered. It retains enzymes, antioxidants, pollen, and other nutrients that are lost in industrial processes. In contrast, many supermarket honeys are heated at high temperatures, filtered to change their texture, and some even contain added syrups. Natural honey also crystallizes over time, which is a sign of purity, not poor quality.
What can be done to help protect bees?
We can all contribute. Some simple actions include planting native flowers in gardens or on balconies, avoiding the use of pesticides and herbicides, consuming local honey and bee products, supporting responsible beekeepers, and educating ourselves about the importance of bees. You can also set up small hotels for solitary bees, which aid pollination.
